This is my seventh year teaching in North Carolina and my second at H.J. MacDonald. I love working with my students and seeing their growth over the school year. I earned a Master's degree in Special Education at the University of Washington in Seattle and have completed all but my thesis for an M.Ed. in Learning and Instruction from the University of San Francisco.
Our classroom has sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. We focus on individual IEP goals and follow The Extentions of the Common Core for all three grades. We also target daily living skills and enjoy the use of our sensory room and playground. We are an active group! We also take pleasure in our exploratory classes and hand-on activities. Our ever capable and caring assistants are Mrs. Patti Gaskins and Mrs. Monica Miller. I can be contacted at [email protected] The classroom phone is 514-6450 ext. 2623 |
English/Language Arts,1Each student works towards achieving their specific IEP goals. We are also working on the alphabet and phonemic awareness. Dolch sight words are presented daily and our focus on reading/listening comprehension is an essential part of our language based program.
For the third nine weeks we are addressing the following Extensions: Key Ideas and Details 1. Analyze a text to determine events that are stated explicitly and those that must be inferred (e.g. the boy jumped out of bed and ran to school. Explicit=boy jumping and running. Inferred=got dressed and ate breakfast). 2. Determine the theme or central idea of a text. 3. Describe the ways that characters respond to a problem or event in a story. 4. Reading for purpose. . |
MathIndividual IEP goals apply . We are working on counting and learning to use a number line. We continue our work on place value Manipulatives of different kinds are used in our math activities.
The next nine weeks we will also be learning about fractions and extending our understanding of numbers to the system of rational numbers. 1. Compare the relationships between the unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4,1/5,1/6/1/8,1/10). 2. Add fractions with like denominators to make a whole (halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths and tenths). We enjoy using fractions while we cook! 3. Understand that the order of the digits determines the given number and use this understanding to compare sets and numbers (i.e., 24 and 42, 24 is less than 42 because it contains 2 tens and 42 contains 4 tens). |
